The use of screens is at the heart of everyday life. While in 2003 it was easy to review the state of knowledge on problematic Internet use, today, 17 years later, knowledge in this field has exploded. In 2020 alone, a search in the PsychINFO database revealed that more than 1,300 scientific articles were published documenting problems related to Internet addiction or video game addiction. This scientific momentum, combined with the rapid and constant development of technologies, makes it necessary to rigorously examine new data in order to develop a clear and nuanced understanding of the contribution of the Internet and various screens.
Based on recent work conducted in Quebec and elsewhere in the world, this presentation will review the foundations of Internet addiction issues. A clarification of the various terms used — eSports, hyperconnectivity, PIU, Internet addiction — will then be presented. Through case studies, a clinical profile of youth receiving treatment and youth considered at risk will then be proposed. The new DEBA-Internet screening tool and the new Web-Addict assessment instrument will be discussed. Finally, a discussion on treatment avenues will conclude this workshop. This workshop should allow various professionals to review the issue of Internet addiction while becoming familiar with the tools used to detect and assess it.
The workshop aims to:
Define cyberaddiction, hyperconnectivity, and gaming disorder;
Understand the clinical characteristics of adolescents suffering from Internet addiction;
Be able to use the DEBA-Internet screening tool and the Web-Addict assessment protocol;
Relate cyberaddiction to mental health issues;
List the available resources to help this population.
