ASD: Screening and the Challenge of Diagnosis

In the context of Bill 21, which notably grants psychologists the authority to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and given the rapidly increasing prevalence rates, we will address the complex issue of diagnosing ASD.

During this presentation, we will review the current diagnostic criteria, the clinical presentation of ASD and its developmental changes, as well as the assessment tools that may be used and the cognitive profile generally associated with the disorder.

Through clinical case examples, we will also explore the issue of differential diagnosis, which every competent clinician must carefully consider.

NOTE: Following the publication of the DSM-5, the term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) replaced the term Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD).
