Severe and/or Chronic Physical Illness in Childhood: Impact on Emotional and Academic Development

We pay little attention to recognizing the impact that a history of serious illness or the presence of a chronic illness can have on a child. Beyond absenteeism and academic delays, several comorbidities may arise and disrupt academic progress. These may include anxiety disorders, developmental delays, oppositional behaviors and control issues, and even ADHD-like symptoms induced by certain medications. Insecure attachment patterns are also common. This workshop will provide avenues for understanding these children, who are sometimes judged “rightly or wrongly” as “spoiled children,” and will make it possible to discuss various intervention approaches likely to help them.
