What Are the Clinical Indicators of a Neurodevelopmental Disorder?

In Quebec, psychologists are required to work with young people and professionals who support children with special needs in the school environment. They are sometimes asked to establish a differential psychological diagnosis for children as early as the first cycle of elementary school, so that early intervention can be provided.

Given the extent of the requests made to the 14 school psychologists of the OPQ and the lack of resources they sometimes have to deal with, it becomes critically important for psychologists to feel better equipped to carry out early screening. Furthermore, they must be familiar with the symptomatic clinical manifestations of children with special needs in order to implement services adapted to their needs. However, the DSM-5 specifies that childhood disorders frequently coexist with other neurodevelopmental disorders, which complicates symptom recognition. It is therefore important for psychologists to use sound clinical questioning regarding the various symptoms and to apply critical analysis to the wide range of psychometric tools available to them.

In this workshop, the main neurodevelopmental disorders of the DSM-5 will be presented, namely intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, developmental coordination disorder, oral language disorder, attention-deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity/impulsivity, and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Particular attention will be paid to the developmental course of these disorders in order to recognize symptomatic indicators through appropriate clinical questioning. At the same time, the psychometric value and sensitivity of the tools available to psychologists will also be discussed.
